  • The Historical Society has a limited research collection. Please call the Museum Curator regarding any requests.

Infirmary History

  • The Wood Couunty Historical Center & Museum is the site of the former County Infirmary, which operated from 1869-1971. After the last of its residents were moved to the new Wood County Nursing Home, the building was slated for destruction, but with support from Lyle Fletcher and other community members, the building was repurposed into a Museum, which re-opened in 1975.

Superintendents & Matrons of the Wood County Infirmary

  • January 16, 1869 - Wood County Infirmary opened with six residents. The Wood County Commissioners appointed J.B. Lockhard as the first Director.
  • 1872 to 1877 - First Superintendent Thomas C. Reid
  • 1877 to 1878 - E.M. Jenkins, Superintendent
  • 1878 to 1904 - Edwin & Charlotte Farmer, Superintendent & Matron
  • 1904 to 1949 - Frank & Lottie Brandeberry, Superintendent & Matron
  • 1949 to 1952 - Dr. & Mrs. C.E. Petteys, Superintendent & Matron
  • 1952 to 1969 - Mr. & Mrs. Wayne Roe, Superintendent & Matron
  • 1969 to 1971 - Doris Roof, a nurse, acted as manager
  • February 15, 1971 - The Infirmary, now primarily a nursing home, closed. The last Infirmary residents moved into the newly built nursing home, now called on Gypsy Lane Road.
  • 1975 - The former County Infirmary re-opens to the public as the Wood County Historical Museum.

Wood County Living History Day

  • This annual event honors Wood County citizens interred in Wood County cemeteries.
