The Wood County 4-H Committee, with support from the Wood County Commissioners, is in the beginning stages of developing the “Wood County 4-H Quilt Square Trail.” This project will bring numerous organizations together throughout the county by showcasing our heritage and we are inviting your 4-H Club to be a part of the program.
Fashioned after the Greene County 4-H Quilt Square Trail established in 2010, Wood County 4-H’ers are being asked to get involved in a project that will have positive impact on the county by encouraging individuals from all over Ohio to drive the quilt square trail- one of the first in the Northwest Ohio area. The idea behind this project is to increase awareness of how important agriculture is to Wood County and express the commitment of 4-H to traditional American values. We also hope that this self-guiding auto tour will attract tourists to the county which will strengthen our economy with their dollars. There is a lot of background to the project, too much to include on this page, so here are the highlights…
- 8’ by 8’ quilt squares are created on exterior grade plywood, and placed on area barns or other buildings selected. Clubs electing to get involved in the community service project will solicit for sponsorship of the squares or decide on fundraising for the club’s square cost, deciding on the quilt square pattern, preparing the board with the pattern, and then painting the quilt squares. Square mounting crews will be established prior to the blocks being finished.
- The cost for each quilt square is approximately $250. This provides the materials, paint, hardware and other expenses. While it is ideal to obtain a single sponsor, we realize that you may have multiple sponsorships. Donations in any amount are important. Anything over the $250.00 is welcomed as well.
- The brochure/map will be created to guide visitors on the Wood County 4-H Quilt Square Trail. Sponsorship of the squares will be honored in the brochure.
We would like to see at least 30 squares funded and completed by Spring of 2012. We are excited about the possibilities of this project and look forward to collaborating numerous organizations throughout the county. Although several other counties in Ohio have quilt square driving tours, this will be only the second 4-H quilt square trail in Northwest Ohio and the third in the entire State.
